About Malta

Surrounded by the deep blue Mediterranean Sea, that is a veritable haven for scuba divers, the Maltese Islands are located 93 kilometers south of Sicily and 300 kilometers north of Libya. The archipelago consists mainly of mainland Malta, Gozo and tiny Comino. All together the islands make up a mere 316sq km with a coastline of 252.81 kilometers.

Malta is the largest of the three islands and is the hub of the Maltese Islands’ commercial, touristic, cultural and administrative activities. Gozo is smaller and its activities are more rural in nature, revolving around fishing, agriculture and crafts with a healthy touristic bustle. Gozo is only at a 20-minute distance by ferry from Malta, where the airport is located. Comino is the smallest of the three islands and is inhabited by only one family. The island’s hotel though attracts a good number of local and foreign tourists towards the relaxation promised by its beautiful surrounding seas.

The Maltese Islands have been renowned for years for their beautiful sunny summer skies and mild winters; for their sandy beaches and relaxing evenings out. But Malta and Gozo offer so much more than just beach tourism.

With a local history dating back 7000 years, visitors to the islands enjoy an unparalleled foray into the diverse influences of the times gone by that are still evident in surrounding building architectures, cultural traditions and local cuisine. Precious exceptional jewels in the forms of world heritage sites that are still standing after thousand of years serve as the testament of a historical wealth that is unmatched throughout the world.

Visit the Citadel in Gozo with its breathtaking views overlooking Gozo’s capital of Rabat, and beyond. Look out through Dwejra’s Azzure Window with its natural stone arch. Take a step back in time among the prehistoric ruins of the temples of Ggantija. Back in Malta, visit the ever-increasingly professionally set up museums that each display information and images from the Islands’ rich past – from the War Museum to the Maritime Museum; from the Limestone Heritage to Palazzo Falson (a lovingly restored Palazzo in the Silent City of Mdina). From the relaxing Valletta Waterfront with its lovely Grand Harbour views to the Birgu Waterfront with its promenade and Yacht Marina, the home to many awesome vessels.

The inviting Mediterranean Sea that enfolds the Maltese Islands is attracting an ever increasing number of seasoned scuba divers with its fascinatingly beautiful and mysterious underwater world just waiting to be discovered and appreciated.

The cliffs adorning sections of the island provide interesting fodder for rock climbing enthusiasts; the soothing sea ideal for sailing and boating lovers. Discover originality in the glass ‘objects d’art’ and Maltese crafts expertly and lovingly created by local artists.
